Description
This drawing, crafted with charcoal, graphite, and soft pastels, holds a deeply personal dedication. In the canvas stands a female figure, her graceful form turned away from us, inviting us to explore the secrets she carries on her back.
As you examine the drawing, you’ll see a group of koi fishes. These vibrant and determined creatures symbolize resilience. The Japanese saying “koi no taki-nobori” (“koi climbing the rapids”) reflects this too, in the belief that the carp is a spirited fish, so strong that it can fight its way up waterfalls, and through its strength and determination overcome all obstacles.
This drawing is a heartfelt tribute to the extraordinary women in my family, my mother, my sisters, their daughters and my sisters-in-law as well. Their stories, their sacrifices, and their unwavering love have shaped my life and inspired me in countless ways. As I see this artwork, I let it serve as a constant reminder of the remarkable lineage of strong, resilient, and beautiful women I am fortunate to be connected with.
“Koi no Taki Nobori” celebrates the legacy of my family’s women, honoring their indomitable spirit and their ability to transform adversity into enduring strength and grace. By sharing this piece, I hope to bring a deeper appreciation for women, and people in general.
